Two people from Pawleys Island were hospitalized after the all-terrain vehicle they were riding illegally on a Georgetown County road Saturday afternoon collided with a car, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Waymond Wilson Jr., 19, was passing another vehicle heading northbound on Oatland Road in the ATV at around 1:47 p.m. when Nathaniel Keith Jr., a 20-year-old Andrews resident, tried to turn left in the car, according to Senior Trooper Bridget Wyant.

The four-wheeler hit the side of the sedan.

Wilson was eventually transported to Medical University Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, and his passenger, 25-year-old Chasadie Grant, was taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. Neither was wearing a helmet, according to Wyant, and the extent of their injuries was not known late Tuesday.

As an off-road vehicle, the ATV is not allowed to be on public roadways in South Carolina.

Keith was cited for failure to yield, and traffic charges are pending against Wilson.

Other media reports referred to a nearby New Year’s parade and a fight there, but Wyant said those were unrelated events.
