Police report: James Island man shot gun into air on New Years Day
A 26-year-old James Island man was arrested on suspicion that he shot his pistol into the air several times early on New Year’s Day.
William Jamaal Williams faces a charge of discharging a firearm within city limits.
The Charleston Police Department responded to Chipley Terrace, where neighbors reported that three men were standing on the residential street and shooting firearms.
Williams emerged from his home and later acknowledged shooting his .40-caliber Smith & Wesson, according to an incident report.
Officers found a shell casing in Williams’ front yard, another in the street and six more in front of a neighbor’s home. That neighbor denied participating in the shooting, but he turned over his .40-caliber Hi-Point pistol for testing.
Neither of the handguns was stolen. Nobody else was arrested in connection with the incident.
Williams has one past arrest in South Carolina, according to the State Law Enforcement Division: on a charge of giving false information in April 2010.
