The treasurer of the Lowcountry Little League was charged today with embezzling more than $8,000 from the organization’s bank account.

Sheriff’s detectives obtained a warrant Monday to charge 35-year-old Tanya Garvin Howard with breach of trust, Maj. Jim Brady said. She turned herself in today and is being held in the Charleston County jail.

The charges are the result of an investigation into a report taken by the sheriff’s office in September. The league’s district administrator, William Edmonds, reported that during an audit conducted before Howard resigned her position, numerous discrepancies of deposits and withdrawals were found, Brady said.

During the course of the investigation, it was determined that $8,360.80 was taken from the account over a two-year period, Brady said.

Howard worked as the league’s treasurer for about two years, an incident report states.

Howard is expected have a bond hearing at 7 p.m.
