Newton Farms, a boutique gourmet grocery business owned by Charleston-based Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co., is expanding to the Isle of Palms.

The company is opening in Island Center, the same shopping center that housed the former Red & White supermarket on Palm Boulevard.

Land owner Pastime Amusement Co. said today that the entire property is being renovated. Newton Farms will open in summer of 2014.

Piggly Wiggly opened its first store at Freshfields Village, between Kiawah and Seabrook islands.

“We are confident their offerings will greatly exceed the needs and expectations of both the residents and visitors of the Isle of Palms,” said Leonard D. Way, vice president of Pastime Amusement, which is affiliated with The Beach Co. of Charleston. “The Newton Farms team understands the unique dynamics of catering to both the local resident and the vacationer.”

Island Center has been around for more than 50 years.

“This extends the longstanding and successful partnership we have enjoyed with Piggly Wiggly Carolina company in numerous locations over many years,” Pastime Amusement said.

The island has been without a full-service grocery since November, when the Red & White closed after losing its lease.
