In final ACC tune-up, Clemson cruises to a 92-51 victory over The Citadel

CLEMSON -- In a final pre-conference tune-up for both basketball teams, Clemson raced to a 92-51 victory over The Citadel today at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Freshman guard Adonis Filer scored a career-best 21 points to lead the Tigers, who take an 8-4 record and a two-game win streak into their ACC opener against Florida State on Saturday.

The 3-8 Bulldogs, meanwhile, have lost seven in a row heading into the meat of its Southern Conference schedule, starting Saturday against Western Carolina at McAlister Field House.

Mike Groselle scored 13 points and Dylen Setzekorn added 11 for the Bulldogs, who committed a season-high 25 turnovers.

The Tigers won easily despite a couple of personnel issues. K.J. McDaniels, a 6-6 sophomore averaging 11.3 points, did not start after he was late for a team meeting, but played in the second half. And senior center Devin Booker, stepping awkwardly on Groselle, twisted his left ankle early in the second half and did not return.

The Bulldogs, who had lost their previous six games by an average of 26 points, managed to hang in this one for about 13 minutes of the first half. The Bulldogs led at 11-10 on a Setzekorn bucket on a pass from Groselle, and trailed by just 18-16 with 9:17 left in the half.

When Matt Van Scyoc hit two free throws, the Bulldogs were within 25-17.

But Clemson senior Milton Jennings started a 29-4 run with a mid-range jumper and a 3-pointer from deep in the corner, and the rout was on. Filer and Jordan Roper also nailed treys during the run, which carried the Tigers to a 47-20 lead and a 47-27 halftime edge.

• Citadel guard Lawrence Miller suffered a broken nose in practice Sunday and played with his nose taped up. Freshman guard Rae Robinson, who has yet to play due to a broken foot, participated in pre-game warmups but did not play.
