Man dies after being struck by train
SPARTANBURG — Authorities say a 50 year old man has died after being struck by a train near downtown Spartanburg.
The Spartanburg County coroner’s office identified the man Monday as Lester McCombs.
He was hit about 6 p.m. Sunday and died in surgery several hours later at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
The coroner’s office said McCombs died of massive internal injuries after he climbed between two rail cars of a train in an attempt to cross the tracks while carrying his bicycle.
McCombs told officers the train was stopped when he started to cross.
The case remains under investigation.
