Tramel Terry had potential when he walked into the Goose Creek football locker room back in the summer of 2009. He was a freshman who had an unusual combination of strength and speed to be an outstanding football player.

He had a dream and the only uncertainty was his desire.

Was he willing to do the work? Be a leader? Be an example?

Coach Chuck Reedy looked at the young player and told him he could be the best player in the state by the time he graduated.

“I knew he coached college,” Terry said of Reedy, whose resume includes a head coaching position at Baylor and an assistant's job at Clemson. “I knew he knew what he was talking about. He knows what it takes to excel. I listened and I worked.”

Four years later, Terry is at the top of the high school football mountain. He was named South Carolina's Mr. Football and he's been honored as an All-American.

Terry, who was All-Lowcountry as a junior, is The Post and Courier's player of the year and heads up the 2012 All-Lowcountry team.

“I offered him a challenge and he accepted it,” Reedy said. “He's right up there with Brandon Shell as far as the best football players at Goose Creek. I've coached in the Lowcountry and A.J. Green is the best football player I've seen. A.J. is No. 1, and Tramel's No. 2. He's that good.”

Terry was a triple-threat as a receiver, running back and return man his senior season. He rushed for 841 yards and tallied 818 yards in receptions and scored 25 touchdowns. He tallied nearly 5,000 all-purpose yards in his career.

There were two disappointments though. His team went 13-0, but was disqualified from the playoffs for using an ineligible player. And he tore his ACL in the Shrine Bowl and will undergo surgery on Jan. 3.

But Terry, who will enroll at Georgia next week, remains upbeat.

“He has the right attitude,” Reedy said. “He's mature and has handled everything thrown his way. That's what makes him special. He has the talent, desire and the humility.”

Terry is the third straight Goose Creek player to be named player of the year. Lineman Brandon Shell earned the honor in 2010 and running back Virgil Smalls was player of the year last season.

Goose Creek landed seven players on the first team, while Wando was next in line with six selections.

Goose Creek's other selections include: defensive linemen Gerald Turner and Michael Myers, linebacker Jalen Stevens, defensive back Omar McCrae, offensive lineman Rodney Garrett and running back Caleb Kinlaw.

Wando's selections include: quarterback Christian Hart, offensive linemen Chuck Rouse and Nolan Kelleher, kicker Casey Clawson, tight end Taylor Kimball and wide receiver Rudder Brown.

Summerville and Timberland both had three first-team selections.

The Green Wave's selections include sophomore lineman Zack Bailey and junior defensive back Darrin Smalls. Both players have been offered by the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Green Wave's Parker Cleveland is the punter.

Timberland's picks include athlete Roderick McCray, defensive back Austin McKinney and lineman Brian Moore. He is the only player in school history to start on both sides of the ball for four years.

Bishop England, which won its second straight Division II-AA state championship, had two selections: defensive end Griffie Loy and defensive back DeAngelo Stephenson.

Bishop England's John Cantey repeats as coach of the year. The team lost 24 seniors from last year's team, but still managed a 13-1 record and another state title. The Bishops recorded a shutout in the title game for the second year in a row.
