Charleston police arrest 6 for soliciting downtown without permits
Charleston police nabbed a half-dozen people over the weekend for soliciting charitable funds without a permit in the downtown area.
Police made the arrests on Meeting and King streets, as well as in areas around The Market. All were charged with violating a municipal ordinance requiring city permits to solicit for funds, according to a police department website.
Incident reports on the arrests were not available Monday because the police department’s records office was closed for the Christmas holiday.
Police spokesman Charles Francis said the individuals cited were not representing charitable organizations. “They were individuals who approached plain-clothes officers and solicited them for their personal gain,” he said.
The officers were not conducting a sweep. They were on regular patrols when they were approached, Francis said.
