You’ve made a list and checked it twice, and there are still some people left to buy for.
No problem. There’s still one more day left for Christmas shopping, and stores are opening early and staying open late to accommodate last-minute shoppers. Many stores are also cutting prices in a sort of end-of-the year Black Friday sale.
Target, for instance, is advertising half-off sales in the hours before Christmas. Stores stayed open until midnight Sunday and will be open from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. today.
Kohl’s was also open until midnight Sunday and will be open from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. today.
K-mart stores also stayed open until midnight Sunday and will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. today.
Toys ‘R’ Us is going one better. Stores were open all night Sunday and will remain open until 10 p.m. tonight.
Monti Rickenbacker took advantage of the extended hours Sunday to pick up two big stuffed bears for his niece at the Toys R Us on Rivers Avenue.
“These were half off, so that was great,” he said. “I was expecting to pay a lot more. That’s usually the good thing about coming out the day before Christmas Eve or on Christmas Eve is you get better deals.”
On the other hand, those going shopping with a predetermined list of items may be disappointed.
“It’s pretty bare,” Rickenbacker said. “It’s like everybody has got to everything. I guess the last-minute shoppers start to come out.”
Traffic was heavy at Citadel Mall in West Ashley and Northwoods Mall in North Charleston Sunday, and managers said they expected big crowds again today. Most shoppers, many wearing Santa hats, carried a bag or two, rather than full shopping carts. They said they were picking up a few items to finish off their lists, rather than waiting until the last minute to get everything.
Mekio Raven of North Charleston, wearing a festive green and red elf hat, was shopping for her boyfriend’s 9-year-old daughter at Northwoods Mall. She ended up getting her a gift card at Claire’s.
“The reason I got the gift card was she likes Claire’s but there’s so much stuff,” Raven said.
“I figured I’d just get her a gift card and she can just pick whatever she wants.”
Also, a clerk told her the store would have a sale after Christmas, so the gift card will be worth more then anyway, she said.
Many retailers are offering electronic gift cards that can be bought online and emailed to people at the last minute. Conceivably, you could wait until Christmas morning to pull off that last-minute gift idea.
