Charleston Councilman William Dudley Gregorie was not mugged in England and does not need people to wire him money, contrary to pleas received by people who are included in Gregorie’s email contact list.
The councilman is the latest victim of a scam in which a person’s email account is hacked, and then emails are sent to their contacts claiming that the person has gotten into some sort of trouble overseas and urgently needs to borrow some money.
The messages often appear to have been written by the victim, although they are not. The scam emails sent from Gregorie’s account were signed “Dudley” — the name by which Gregorie is known to friends and colleagues.
The councilman said he’s been getting calls all day about the emails, which say that he “was mugged by some unknown gunmen” while on vacation and needs to borrow some money.
