Parks official, environmental leaders meeting about Folly Beack park renourishment project
FOLLY BEACH — A Charleston County park official is meeting with an environmental group official to try to save a groin-and-renourishment project to rebuild the popular beach park here.
Tom O’Rourke, county park and recreation commission director, said the issue could be resolved by the new year. That could allow work to go ahead, potentially re-opening the park by June.
The Coastal Conservation League has opposed the groin because it could rob sand flow in the shore current from a nearby shorebird rookery and feeding ground. Director Dana Beach said he has made proposals on how to go ahead with the project while protecting the rookery.
