Charleston County Councilmember Elliott Summey today announced he’s created an exploratory committee to run for the 1st Congressional District.

If he follows through, he will join what’s expected to be a crowded field to succeed Tim Scott, who Gov. Haley picked this week to replace Republican Jim DeMint in the Senate.

Summey’s formal announcement would be in January after Scott officially resigns his seat.

Also today, state Rep. Chip Limehouse, R-Charleston, said he’s “doing every thing I can possibly do to start a race” for Congress.
