The Lowcountry Food Bank selected the Junior League of Charleston Inc. as its Volunteer of the Year for 2012.

The honor was awarded to the Junior League for helping the food bank distribute thousands of pounds of food to children in the community in 2011. Members of the Junior League were joined by food bank staff, board members, and community partners for the announcement and a celebration of their accomplishment.

“We are honored to be recognized by the Lowcountry Food Bank for our volunteer efforts. This award helps to highlight our successes as we celebrate our 90th anniversary in the Charleston community,” says Lisa Rainero, Junior League of Charleston’s President. “We’re proud to have been in partnership with the Lowcountry Food Bank for more than six years. They serve the community in an extraordinary way.”

“We are thrilled to present this award to a recipient that has not only been a terrific help in our warehouse, but inspires people around them on a daily basis,” said Lowcountry Food Bank CEO Pat Walker. “The Junior League’s sheer excitement to help others in the Lowcountry is remarkable, and we are proud to have them in the food bank family. We commend them for being such engaged women within our community.”

The Junior League of Charleston is one of nearly 300 leagues worldwide dedicated to such purposes and raises more than $100,000 annually to further this mission. The organization combines trained volunteers with the money it puts into the community for double impact. Last year, Junior League members invested more than 2,100 volunteer hours valued at $45,000.
