Charleston has received accolades for having the most attractive people in the country (Travel & Leisure) and for being the top tourist destination (Conde Nast). Early next year, Charleston gets another chance to be in the limelight, this time as one of five cities where people can audition for Simon Cowell’s “The X Factor.”

The show’s website recently revealed that auditions for the third season will be held in Charleston on March 19. Other cities include: Los Angeles, New Orleans, Long Island, NY, and Denver. (Organizers made a common mistake by identifying Charleston as being in North Carolina on its registration form.)

The location of the auditions in Charleston has not been announced.

“The X-Factor” is Cowell’s version of American Idol. Its team of judges travel across the country to find undiscovered solo artists and vocal groups who then vie for a $5 million recording contract with Syco/Sony Music.

Contestants must be more than 12 years old, and those that survive the first audition are sent to a “Boot Camp” where they are mentored by one of the show’s judges. In its debut season, Melanie Amaro was the winner.
