Driver fleeing Cayce police causes fatal crash killing Governors Mansion supervisor
Authorities say two people were killed after a driver fleeing Cayce police ran a red light and caused an early morning crash.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol says the crash happened at around 12:30 a.m. Friday in downtown Columbia.
Investigators say the driver of a 2011 Hyundai ran a red light while being chased by Cayce officers. The Hyundai hit a taxi and a minivan, which then hit a building and caught fire.
Coroner Gary Watts says 48-year-old Chamberlain Branch was driving the minivan, and 23-year-old Shyborn Belton was driving the Hyundai. Both men died at the scene.
The taxi driver wasn’t hurt.
Chamberlain was the longtime supervisor at South Carolina’s Governor’s Mansion. Gov. Nikki Haley said Friday her family was heartbroken at his death.
