Open Daily, through Dec. 31: The 23rd annual Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island County Park. Light up your holidays with more than two million gleaming lights. Open daily through Dec. 31, you can journey down a three-mile driving tour jam-packed with holiday light displays, then stretch your legs and enjoy the attractions within Winter Wonderland and Santa痴 Village. Ongoing now through Dec. 31: The Holiday Festival of Lights Light Display Design Contest. The Holiday Festival of Lights now offers a light display design contest for children ages 12 and under. The festival houses hundreds of light displays of all kinds each year, and CCPRC is encouraging kids to submit their ideas for a new display. The grand prize winner will receive a Super Splash Pass for entry into the county痴 three waterparks for summer 2013. For rules and to download an entry form, visit www.holidayfestivaloflights.com. All entries must be received by Jan. 4.

Dec. 13: Holiday Hoedown at Wannamaker County Park. 6 p.m. People with special needs and their families and friends are invited to an unforgettable night. Come dressed in your favorite western gear to welcome the holiday country-style. Dance to a DJ, watch as an ice sculpture is created and have light refreshments with Mrs. Claus. Tickets are limited; advance purchase is recommended. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Fee: $5/$4 CCR Discount/$5 on-site (if available)

Dec. 31: Winter Carnival at the Holiday Festival of Lights, James Island County Park. 5:30-11 p.m. The perfect place for families to celebrate the New Year, the Winter Carnival features children痴 amusement rides, an old-fashioned carousel, portable climbing wall, inflatables and much more. Purchase a $10 wristband for unlimited rides on attractions (festival train not included). At 9 p.m., ring in 2013 with a bang with a New Year痴 Eve fireworks show. Dec. 15, 19, 22, 26, 29: Early Morning Bird Walks at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 8:30-11:30 a.m. Walk through many distinct habitats allows group to view and discuss a variety of birds, butterflies and other organisms. Pre-registration is encouraged, but walk-in registrations at Caw Caw are welcome. A chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Fee: $5/Free for Gold Pass Holders

Dec. 8-Feb. 9: Team Charleston Recreational Club at James Island County Park. 9-11 a.m. The Club Team is designed to introduce newcomers to the sport of climbing. This will be eight weeks of fun, excitement and challenge for your child. They値l learn to belay and climb through fun and interesting games and activities. Age: 7-17. Fee: $138/$125 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

Dec. 13: James Island Bird Walks at James Island County Park. 8:30-10:30 a.m. Birding experts will help identify and count songbirds, birds of prey, wading birds and others found in the park痴 diverse habitats. A chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: Free; however, pre-registration is required.

Dec. 14: Folly Beach Bird Walk at Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve. 8:30-10:30 a.m. This walk focuses on the northeast end of Folly Island. Group hopes to see songbirds, as well as a variety of shorebirds and seabirds such as Piping Plovers and Northern Gannets. A registered chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 12 & up. Fee: Free; however, pre-registration is required.

Dec. 15: Family Artisan Series: Fire and Clay at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Since the dawn of time, humans have been captivated by the beauty of both fire and jewelry. Warm yourself by the fire and learn how to turn lumps of clay into decorative beads. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 8 & up. Fee: $10/$8 CCR Discount.

Dec. 15: Introduction to Climbing: Climbing 101 at James Island County Park. 1-4 p.m. This class will introduce you to the world of climbing. Learn about gear, basic knots, technique and how to belay. After completing this course, you値l be prepared to take a belay test during your next visit to the Climbing Wall. Age: 14 & up. Fee: $24/$20 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

Dec. 15: Explore Your Parklands at Laurel Hill Plantation. Advance registration is required for all participants in this program. 1-4:30 p.m. Amid increasing development east of the Cooper River, over 700 acres of natural beauty have been preserved adjacent to Park West. From the ruins of the old plantation home to the surrounding forests, this property provides a peek into 18th- and 19th-century life in East Cooper. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $15/$12 CCR Discount.

Dec. 16: Intermediate Climbing Courses: Climbing 205: Single Pitch Rescues at James Island County Park. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Learn valuable rescue skills for your next rock-climbing trip such as rescue theories, belay escapes and counter ascents. Participants must have a current CCPRC Belay Card. Age: 14 & up. Fee: $60/$50 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

Dec. 21: Winter Explorers Camp at James Island County Park. 8 a.m.-5 p.m. This camp introduces children to the beauty of their county parks. Dec. 22: Carolina Blues at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 10-11 a.m. Come experiment with Carolina Indigo and examine the history behind the dye that starts off emerald green then changes to brilliant blue. Note this program includes a fun tie-dyeing activity. Each participant should bring a 100 percent cotton cloth item to dye. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $9/$7 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

Dec. 22: Introduction to Climbing: Climbing 103: Climbing Movement at James Island County Park. 1-4 p.m. Climb smarter not harder, as group covers the basics of climbing technique where small gains in technique lead to big gains in ability. You値l learn better footwork, balance, body positioning and more. Age: 14 & up. Fee: $24/$20 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.

Dec. 22: Canoeing At Caw Caw: Heritage to Habitat Canoe Tour at Caw Caw Interpretive Center.

1:30-4 p.m. Travel back to the age of rice with this interpretive canoe trip. Paddle through rice fields and canals that now serve as one of the richest wildlife habitats in the Lowcountry. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $15/$12 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.
