Opposition to groin permit could doom Folly Beach park
FOLLY BEACH — The Coastal Conservation League is opposing a permit to build a groin at the eroding county park here. The opposition could mean the once-popular, now closed park is doomed.
The league opposes the groin because it would deprive nearby shorebird grounds of sand. A Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission study says it won’t. But if an appeal of the permit has to work its way through the courts, the beach park will be lost before any work can be done, and the commission won’t pursue it.
