A proposed citywide smoking ban in Goose Creek will get its first airing before City Council Tuesday night.

Council is scheduled to take up the proposal at its 7 p.m. meeting in City Hall.

Most members of City Council appeared reluctant to support the ban when it was discussed at an October workshop. The issue was brought before council by Franklin Moore, who was elected earlier this year.

The proposed ordinance would make it illegal to smoke in public places and places of employment within city limits. It would allow smoking on porches and decks more than 10 feet from a building’s entrance. Violators could be fined $10 to $25.

Council did not support a similar law in 2009.

If council supports the current proposal, it will have a second reading before becoming law.
