Public memorial service planned for former Charleston School Superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson

A public memorial service for former Charleston County School Superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson is being planned for Friday evening.

Goodloe-Johnson, who led the district from October 2003 until June 2007, died Wednesday after a battle with lung cancer. She was the district’s first female and first black public school superintendent.

The memorial service will be held at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in North Charleston at 6:30 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Funeral arrangements for Goodloe-Johnson are being handled by Fielding Home for Funerals. Plans have not yet been finalized.
