Social workers often face many barriers when trying to help a family. Occasionally, the most challenging case will turn out to be one of the most rewarding, and that is how a Good Cheer Fund agency feels about the Jones family.
Ms. Jones came to the United States so her children could have a better life by gaining an education. Ms. Jones cannot read or understand English but works several jobs to provide for her family, and has connected to various community resources with the help of her case worker and her childrenís teachers.
Her four children, ages 6, 11, 14 and 16, are the focus of Ms. Jonesí hard work. Though they have struggled to consistently attend school, each child has improved his or her attendance and grades in the past several months. The two girls have made the A/B honor roll, and the older boy has attended school for almost a month without absences.
The Jones family has made strides but is still struggling. For example, Ms. Jones sleeps on the floor so the children can have the beds.
Your donation can help provide the family with a holiday meal and perhaps a space heater for their trailer to keep them warm this winter.
Since 1927, contributions to The Post and Courierís Good Cheer Fund have helped the less fortunate in the Lowcountry during the holidays. The six charitable organizations sharing the funds are the Star Gospel Mission, Salvation Army, Lowcountry Food Bank, Carolina Youth Development Center, Association for the Blind and Coastal Catholic Charities. Every penny of the money goes to these agencies as there are no administrative costs involved.
Send your tax-deductible contributions to the Good Cheer Fund, c/o The Post and Courier, 134 Columbus St., Charleston, SC 29403-4800. Donations also may be made in person or online at www.goodcheerfund.com.
