At least 30 tires slashed in Wando Woods neighborhood Sunday

James Smith woke to a knock on his front door about 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

He answered, and on the porch of his home on Karen Drive in the Wando Woods neighborhood stood a North Charleston police officer telling him several of his tires had been slashed overnight.

Smith said he found himself stuck at home after losing five tires on his three vehicles.

He wasn’t alone in his frustration. At least 30 tires were slashed on his and nearby streets. An incident report from the North Charleston Police Department lists six victims related to the incident.

According to the report, one of Smith’s neighbors came outside about 3 a.m. on his way to work and noticed that the driver’s side tires on his Dodge Ram truck were flat.

The man told police that his other three vehicles were also damaged, including the two front tires on his son’s Mercedes.

A nearby resident on Glenn Street reported all four tires on his Oldsmobile Alero slashed.

Smith said one of his neighbors was angered at losing all 12 tires on his three vehicles.

“I think it was probably just some neighborhood kids,” Smith said. “It had to have been more than one person.”

Some residents did report seeing several teens on the street that night.

One man told police he was alarmed when his dogs started barking about 10 p.m.

When he looked to see what they were barking at, he saw four teens, about 13 years old, standing in the street, the report said.

North Charleston Deputy Chief Scott Deckard said detectives are investigating the case, but no suspect has been identified.
