Sam is in his 80s and lives with his wife, Patricia, and his sister Thelma. He is a man of the land, having retired after working for many years as a farmer on Johns Island.

Many days, Sam is unable even to drive, and Patricia and Thelma do their best to handle the upkeep of their household. Despite combining their resources, the three of them often have to choose between purchasing food and paying for their medications and utilities. This holiday season they have had to seek food assistance from a Good Cheer Fund agency.

Sam is known for his smile and the joy he brings to everyone he meets. Staff members at the food bank say the family inspires the staff every day.

Your generous donation can help keep that big smile on Sam’s face and help pay him back for providing food for the Lowcountry in years past by making sure his family has a box of nutritious food for the holidays.

Since 1927, contributions to The Post and Courier’s Good Cheer Fund have helped the less fortunate in the Lowcountry during the holidays. The six charitable organizations sharing the funds are the Star Gospel Mission, Salvation Army, Lowcountry Food Bank, Carolina Youth Development Center, Association for the Blind and Coastal Catholic Charities. Every penny of the money goes to these agencies as there are no administrative costs involved.

Send your tax-deductible contributions to the Good Cheer Fund, c/o The Post and Courier, 134 Columbus St., Charleston, SC 29403-4800. Donations also may be made in person or online at
