Life hangs in the balance at trauma centers

Violence and injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young adults, which is one important reason for having an accredited trauma center nearby.

Five trauma centers are available here to treat the most serious injuries, but there is only one such facility in the North Area at Trident Medical Center.

The Trident unit recently passed a re-accreditation review to maintain its status as a designated trauma center.

“It’s not just a plaque,” said Jim Beasley, spokesman for the state Department of Health and Environmental Control.

The presence of a trauma unit in a community can mean the difference between life and death. The first 60 minutes after the most serious injuries, the so-called “golden hour,” is critical to survival, he said.
