Mount Pleasant names Carl Ritchie as new police chief
MOUNT PLEASANT — Major Carl Ritchie, a 24-year veteran of this town’s police department, will start serving as its new chief Jan. 1.
Town Council voted unanimously today to approve Ritchie’s promotion, which was the recommendation by Town Administrator Eric DeMoura.
Ritchie said afterward he did not expect any significant changes from how the department has been run under Chief Harry Sewell, 52, who announced last month he would resign to work for the Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy.
“I don’t think you’ll see a whole lot of difference with me and Chief Sewell. We grew up together with this agency,” Ritchie said.
Mayor Billy Swails called Ritchie “a good military man and a good community member, adding that when DeMoura put forth Ritchie’s name “it was a no-brainer for us.”
Ritchie will oversee a force with about 149 sworn officers and 43 civilian personnel.
