Public to hear latest plans for S.C. Highway 41 bridge

The next chapter in the saga of the S.C. Highway 41 bridge over the Wando River begins Tuesday with a public hearing to solicit comments from area residents and business owners.

Where: Mount Pleasant Recreation Department, Park West Complex, 1251 Park West Boulevard, Mount Pleasant.

Details: The meeting will not include a formal verbal comment period, but written comments will be accepted.

After presenting several designs to the public over 8 years, the DOT now feels it has no options other than a 55-foot fixed span, Mattox said.

At the first public information meeting in January 2005, the DOT presented a plan for a 45-foot clearance fixed span that nobody liked.

In May 2010, two alternatives were presented: a 55-foot fixed span and a low-level bascule bridge, similar to the existing bridge. The bascule bridge was approved, but support faltered because of an added $10 million cost to build and maintain it, Mattox said.
