NORTH CHARLESTON -- Democratic lawmakers want an independent investigation of South Carolina’s hacked state tax returns and want tax credits for residents who have to deal with having their identities stolen.

Charleston Rep. Leon Stavrinakis made the call during a North Charleston news conference Thursday at the same time Camden Sen. Vincent Sheheen and other Democrats met with reporters in Columbia.

They want the Legislative Audit Council to review how the Revenue Department allowed a hacker to get into its tax files and steal Social Security numbers and other information.

Stavrinakis says the investigation should not be left to a firm chosen by Gov. Nikki Haley.

Haley’s spokesman Rob Godfrey says there already has been an independent audit but Haley has no objection to a second one.
