Parents struggle after taking in daughter, grandchildren

David and Elaine are a retired couple in their 60s. Until recently they were living comfortably on their fixed income. Unfortunately, their 35-year-old daughter, Rebecca, who is a single mother to their three grandchildren, was recently diagnosed with stomach cancer. After undergoing multiple surgeries, Rebecca was unable to work, and she and the children moved in with her parents.

The coupleís fixed income is simply not enough for their six-person household, and for the first time in their lives they are struggling to put food on the table.

Feeling embarrassed and unsure where to turn, David and Rebecca were referred to a food pantry that benefits from the Good Cheer Fund. They are grateful that their community can help them at this very difficult time in their lives, and your contribution to the Good Cheer Fund can help ensure that they have food on their table during the holiday season.

UPDATE: On Monday we wrote about G.D., who needed specialized shoes to help with her diabetic condition. As soon as the story was published, we were contacted by two stores offering to help. Her sponsoring agency is now working on getting her to one of them for a fitting. Thanks to Charles Howell at SAS Shoes and Steve Vettel at Kassis Brothers Shoes for stepping up with this generous offering.

Donations to The Post and Courierís Good Cheer Fund have helped the less fortunate in the Lowcountry since 1927. The six charitable organizations sharing the funds collected are the Carolina Youth Development Center, Lowcountry Food Bank, Salvation Army, Star Gospel Mission, Association for the Blind and Coastal Catholic Charities. Every cent of the money raised goes directly to the agencies as there are no administrative costs involved.
