A Berkeley County Sheriff's forensics unit finishes processing the Lexus sedan in which a gunshot victim was found outside the Department of Social Services office in Moncks Corner this afternoon.

Berkeley County sheriff’s deputies are investigating an apparent drug-related shooting that occurred this afternoon, leaving one man with a serious wound to the neck.

The incident stemmed from a drug deal that went bad around 1 p.m. in the so-called 41 section between St. Stephen and Bonneau, sheriff’s spokesman Dan Moon said.

The victim drove off in a maroon Lexus and the gunman gave chase, Moon said. At some point, the gunman caught up with the Lexus and opened fire, wounding the victim, he said.

A friend of the victim somehow came to his aid and drove him to a road off U.S. Highway 17A beside a county office building, Moon said. The building houses an office of the state Department of Social Services, but despite some initial reports, there is no indication the shooting had anything to do with that agency, he said.

It’s not clear why they ended up there, as the victim and his friend passed a medical center along the way, Moon said.

Investigators have suspects in the case but are not ready to release any names, Moon said.

Moon did not release the name of the victim. One of the man’s relatives said he is around 19 years old. He was airlifted by helicopter to an area hospital for treatment.
