Berkeley employees to get extra holiday

Despite the objections of one county councilman, Berkeley County employees will have three days off for the Christmas holiday.

County Council on Monday passed a resolution by a vote of 5-1 giving employees a holiday on Dec. 26 in addition to Dec. 24 and 25. Councilmen Steve Davis and Bob Call were absent.

“I think it’s a little excessive,” said Councilman Dennis Fish, the dissenting vote.

Councilman Phillip Farley said state offices also are closed on Dec. 26, and the county closely interacts with state offices.

“It’s also a way of saying that we appreciate and recognize (county employees’) hard work,” said Councilman Caldwell Pinckney.

Like state employees, county employees also will have a holiday on Jan. 1.

Last year, council voted after much discussion and a special meeting to give most employees one weeks’ pay as a Christmas bonus. The issue has not come up yet this year, county officials said.
