South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. urges customers to be aware of scam artists posing as SCE&G employees during the holiday season.

Some customers have reported instances of individuals portraying themselves as SCE&G employees over the phone, requesting immediate payment of the customer’s SCE&G bill and threatening to disconnect service if payment is not made.

The Cayce-based utility only accepts payments at its business offices, by mail, authorized payment agencies, online or through its phone payment provider, BillMatrix, by calling 1-800-450-9160.

SCE&G usually notifies customers by phone or in writing before an employee is scheduled to arrive to perform any work inside the home. Utility employees also wear SCE&G blue uniforms, a white company badge with a photo ID and drive marked SCE&G trucks.

If someone arrives unannounced or without company ID and introduces themselves as an SCE&G employee, the customer should call 1-800-251-7234 or dial 911 if they feel threatened. Do not give out any personal information to high-pressure tactics over the phone or in person.
