Contributions can help diabetic buy new shoes this holiday season

Uncontrolled diabetes irrevocably altered the course of G.D.’s life. A series of auto accidents triggered by low blood sugar blackouts left G., a high-functioning college student, with a helplessness resulting from multiple brain injuries.

Now 59, G. resides in an assisted-living home and strives to live within her meager monthly budget. She recently visited a Good Cheer Fund agency and mentioned that she needed to purchase some adhesive to patch together her specialized shoes, designed to ease the discomfort of diabetes-related physical and/or circulation abnormalities. When asked why she did not simply consider buying a new pair, she looked surprised by the notion and said that she could not afford the $250 and still maintain the integrity of her budget.

Your contribution to the Good Cheer Fund can help G. step into a brighter 2013 with a new pair of shoes this holiday season.

Since 1927, contributions to The Post and Courier’s Good Cheer Fund have helped the less fortunate in the Lowcountry during the holidays. The six charitable organizations sharing the funds are the Star Gospel Mission, Salvation Army, Lowcountry Food Bank, Carolina Youth Development Center, Association for the Blind and Coastal Catholic Charities. Every penny of the money goes to these agencies, as there are no administrative costs involved.

Send your tax-deductible contributions to the Good Cheer Fund, c/o The Post and Courier, 134 Columbus St., Charleston, SC 29403-4800. Donations also may be made in person or at
