Spartanburg lawmaker’s tax evasion trial scheduled to start today
SPARTANBURG — Trial is scheduled to begin for suspended Spartanburg Rep. Harold Mitchell on state tax evasion charges.
The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reported the proceedings are to begin Monday on charges by the state revenue department that the Democrat failed to file state income tax returns between 2005 and 2008.
The agency says Mitchell owes more than $7,000.
Mitchell was indicted by the state grand jury in January and was suspended from the House.
Mitchell denies the charges. He released a report earlier this year that he says showed he overpaid state taxes by nearly $2,000 during the period in question.
The 47-year-old Mitchell has been in the House since 2005.
He faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $40,000 if he is convicted.
