Fire engulfs North Charleston apartment building; no injuries reported
A fire engulfed a North Charleston apartment building today.
The blaze broke out shortly before 5 p.m. at the Delta Oaks Apartments at 5150 Delta St., which is near Rivers Avenue and I-526. Dark clouds of smoke were visible for miles in the heavily traveled area.
Rush-hour traffic on I-526 slowed to a crawl as the Rivers Avenue ramps were closed.
The building had 14 apartments. No injuries were reported, according to North Charleston Fire Department spokeswoman Bianca Sancic. Firefighters pulled a dog from one apartment.
Crews from North Charleston, Charleston, St. Andrews and St. John’s fire departments were on scene for several hours.
Red Cross volunteers served drinks and snacks for emergency workers and opened a shelter at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church on Rivers Avenue for families who needed a place to stay.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
