Goose Creek investigators are looking for common threads between two store robberies this week in which a man demanded cash while paying for a snack, police Capt. John Grainger said.

In the first case, around 8:35 p.m. Wednesday, the robber picked out and paid for a pack of cheesy crackers at Big T’s store at 402 St. James Ave, an incident report stated.

The clerk, a 31-year-old woman, described the robber as a black man, 6 feet tall and about 150 pounds. He was wearing a black jacket and a dark-color baseball cap.

“When she opened the cash drawer to provide the customer his change, he lurched over the counter and began grabbing cash,” the report stated.

The clerk and a friend in the store at the time, a 49-year-old man, tried to subdue the robber. But they gave up their fight when the robber reached toward his waistband as if he was about to pull a gun and said, “Don’t try it.”

The robber was never seen with a firearm.

A police dog tracked a scent from the front door to an outside corner of the building, where the dog lost the trail.

It wasn’t known whether the robber got into a vehicle or climbed onto a bicycle.

Before 10:30 p.m. the next day at the Circle K gas station at 100 Stephanie Drive, a clerk said a man in a black knit hat, black leather jacket, blue jeans and a red sweater entered the store.

The clerk, a 23-year-old woman, also noticed that the man had a prominent underbite, according to the report.

As the man rummaged through his pockets for change to pay for a pack of Juicy Fruit gum, he leaned over the counter and said, “Don’t make me use this. Just give me all your money,” according to the clerk.

The clerk handed over what she thought was less than $100 in cash. She never saw a weapon.

A witness said the robber got into a dark-color BMW near the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall next door. Responding police officers were unable to track down any suspects.

“Investigators are evaluating the similarities in the cases to determine if the same subject is involved in both cases,” said Grainger, a spokesman for the Goose Creek Police Department.
