Nonprofit WINGS lands $50,000 grant, national recognition
WINGS, a Charleston-based nonprofit that teaches students social and emotional skills in an after-school setting, has landed a $50,000 grant and been recognized by a national character education group.
WINGS received the money from NoVo Foundation, which invests in social and emotional learning and does not accept unsolicited grant proposals.
WINGS also was one of 297 groups from across the world to receive the Promising Practice Award from the Character Education Partnership. The award honors schools and programs that exhibit successful ways of reinforcing character traits.
More than 500 applications were submitted for 2012 and only four youth-serving nonprofits were selected.
WINGS serves 600 students in four Charleston County schools and two Fulton County, Ga., schools.
