The Citadel football coach Kevin Higgins was named the Southern Conference coach of the year Tuesday, and seven Bulldog players made all-conference teams chosen by league coaches and media.
Higgins, who led the Bulldogs to a 7-4 overall record and 5-3 mark in the league, was named coach of the year in media voting, and shared the honor with Samford’s Pat Sullivan in voting by the coaches.
Center Mike Sellers, a junior from Fort Dorchester High School, was the lone Bulldog to make the all-SoCon first team, both by media and coaches. He also was named winner of the league’s Jacobs Blocking Award.
Defensive end Chris Billingslea and punter Cass Couey were named to the second team by coaches and media, and cornerback Brandon McCladdie made the media’s second team.
Linebacker James Riley, defensive tackle Mitchell Jeter and defensive end Mark Thomas made the all-freshman team chosen by coaches.

4 CSU football players earn Big South awards
Charleston Southern senior cornerback Charles James was been named to the Big South first team, while junior defensive back Elijah Lee and freshman wide receiver Larry Jones III were been named to the second team. Bucs’ senior center Nick Kemper was named to the Big South All-Academic team.
