Summerville woman charged with felony DUI, one hospitalized after wreck
A Summerville woman is accused of driving under the influence, and causing a wreck that left one person hospitalized Wednesday morning.
Kourtnie Burge, 22, of Three Wood Lane in Summerville was arrested and charged with felony DUI after the white Nissan she was driving ran off of Interstate 26, entered a curve near the overpass at Bennet Yard, hit a retaining wall and flipped before coming to a stop on Louise Drive in North Charleston about 3 a.m., Charleston County Sheriff’s Maj. Jim Brady said.
A South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper spotted the vehicle driving at least 100 mph while on Interstate 26. Brady said the trooper attempted to catch up to the vehicle, but lost sight twice before the wreck occurred.
When authorities arrived at the crash site one person was outside of the vehicle, which was on fire, and another was entrapped, Brady said.
Paramedics transported the male passenger to Medical University Hospital with potentially life threatening injuries, Brady said.
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the wreck, Brady said.
