Van Scyoc, Groselle lead Citadel basketball to rout of Montreat

Freshman Matt Van Scyoc scored 16 points and senior Mike Groselle added 13 as The Citadel cruised to a 62-45 rout of Montreat tonight at McAlister Field House.

The Bulldogs improved to 2-1 on the young basketball season. Montreat, an NAIA squad from North Carolina, is 1-3.

Van Scyoc, a 6-6 swingman, hit 6 of 9 shots, including four from 3-point range, and grabbed seven rebounds. Groselle was 6 of 8 from the field.

The Bulldogs built a 30-15 lead by halftime, with Groselle scoring 11 points and Van Scyoc 10. The Citadel shot 54.5 percent and held Montreat to 33.3 percent in the opening half, but still struggled with turnovers, committing 10.

The Citadel continues a five-game homestand to open the season Saturday against Union.
