One of the two suspects in Tuesday’s shooting on Lee Street was arrested today.
Police also identified the man who was shot.
Antuane Jamal Means, 18, whose last known address was on Murray Drive in North Charleston, is charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. He is held in the Charleston County jail.
Police are still looking for a second suspect, described as a black male who was wearing a yellow safety vest and baseball cap with black trim.
Police were called to an apartment on Lee Street about noon Tuesday and found 18-year-old Tyrek Varns lying on the kitchen floor with a gunshot wound in his neck, according to the incident report. His mother and a friend told police they were in another room at the time and heard two gunshots.
Varns told an EMS worker that he knew the person who shot him, according to the report. He was taken to Medical University Hospital for surgery.
Varns was awaiting trial on charges of abusing a child when he was shot.
In 2010, North Charleston police charged Varns with infliction of great bodily injury to a child after they said he and two other teenagers held an 18-month-old boy by his ankles and beat him.
The child received five rib fractures, lacerations to his liver, spleen and pancreas, and bruises to his chest, back and abdomen. Doctors also discovered an old skull fracture that had healed, police said.
The child’s mother was jailed for allegedly allowing the abuse to occur, authorities said.
Varns was free on $80,000 bail and awaiting trial on the abuse charge when Tuesday’s shooting occurred.
Anyone with information about the second suspect is asked to call Charleston police at 577-7434 or leave an anonymous tip at Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
