Atkinson wins third City Senior Amateur golf in four years
Defending champion Bert Atkinson put together his third straight round of 71 Sunday to win his third City Senior Amateur golf tournament by two shots at Municipal Golf Course.
Atkinson, 54, managed to hold off Andy Gianoukos in the tournament for golfers 50 and older.
Gianoukos shot a final- round 70 and actually caught Atkinson for the lead after a front-nine 34, but Atkinson shot 34 on the back nine to Gianoukos even-par 36 to earn the victory.
Atkinson finished the tournament at 3-under-par 213. Mike Harrison and Brian Lott tied for third at 219, while Pat Harrington and Gary Ramage tied for fifth at 221.
Nick Avery easily won the Super Seniors division for players 60-69, shooting 72207 to finish 12 shots in front of Mo York.
Jerry Weiss won the Super Super Seniors for players 70 and older with a score of 213, with Billy Ray Graybeal finishing second at 225.
Atkinson won the City Senior in 2009, his first year of eligibility, but did not compete in 2010 when he made an attempt at qualifying for the Champions Tour.
Atkinson also has won the City Amateur seven times. He will be inducted into the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame in January.
