North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey said today that the city plans to fly military veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars to see their memorials in Washington, starting later this summer.
The vets would fly for free in a fashion similar to the Honor Flights, the non-profit program that has taken thousands of World War II veterans to the national World War II memorial in D.C.
North Charleston already has taken local World War II veterans on similar trips, including to Washington and to New Orleans.
Veterans of the Vietnam and Korean wars deserve a similar recognition, said Summey, who also pointed their aging populations.
Money for the trips would be raised in part through donations, Summey said.
