Mike Groselle scored 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead The Citadel to an 84-76 win over VMI today, and into the championship game of the All-Military Classic at McAlister Field House.
The 1-0 Bulldogs will play Air Force in Sunday’s championship game at 4 p.m. The Falcons rallied for a 76-65 win over Army in today’s first game. Army and VMI will play for third-place at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Freshman Matt Van Scoyc scored 18 points with seven rebounds in his Citadel debut, and guard Marshall Harris added 19 points and nine assists. Groselle’s double-double was the 23rd of his career, a Citadel record.
Tied at 34-34 at the half, the Bulldogs opened up a 64-54 lead with 8:15 left on a left-handed bucket by Groselle, a 6-8 senior.
Against The Citadel, VMI jumped to a 21-10 lead in the opening minutes, but the Bulldogs came back behind a pressing defense that dropped back into a 2-3 zone. C.J. Bray hit a trey and a mid-range jumper during an 11-0 run to tie it at 21-21.
The Citadel took a 34-29 lead on a 3-pointer by Dylan Setzekorn and two free throws from Harris, but the Keydets scored the final five points to knot the score at 34-34 at the half.
