Many local retail establishments will honor military veterans, retirees and active-duty service people this Veterans Day by offering free, or discounts on, products and services.
Remember, you must show proof of service, and it's always a good idea to call ahead to ensure the business is participating, as many are franchises and may have different policies.
Here are just a few. You can find these and more military discounts on the Savvy blog.
Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is offering free admission on Sunday and Monday to active-duty military personnel, veterans and their immediate family. This free admission during the Veterans Day observance applies only to general garden admission. The separate tours are not included. Valid active-duty or veteran's identification is required. Call 571-1266.
The Kenneth Cole Outlet store at Tanger Outlet is giving vets 41 percent off through Nov. 14. Visit the Savvy blog for a coupon.
Liquid Highway, 1126 Hungryneck Blvd., Mount Pleasant, is offering free car washes for veterans. Call 849-2774.
Veterans and their families get free admission to Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum on Monday. Parking fees still apply.
Applebee's is offering a free meal to military members on Sunday. “We've been doing this for the past five years,” said Jason Groseclose, assistant general manager of the Ashley Phosphate location. “We offer a great selection, too, anything from steaks to burgers to pasta.” Groseclose said it is his favorite day of the year to work. “It's so busy, and I see total strangers meet and sit and talk and swap stories. It's a very powerful thing we do.”
The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) will be showing its appreciation to the military and veterans on Monday. For the observation of Veterans Day, CARTA will provide free rides for any veteran or active-duty member of the U.S. armed forces. In order to get a free ride, passengers will need to present proper identification, such as a U.S. Uniformed Service ID card, Veterans Affairs card, and/or American Legion or VFW membership cards.
