McClellanville starts fund to help the New Jersey town that helped during Hurricane Hugo
MCCLELLANVILLE — This tiny town has rallied to help its Hurricane Sandy-ravaged “big brother,” Toms River, N.J.
Nearly two dozen residents showed up earlier this week at a Town Council meeting that doesn’t usually draw much of a crowd. They wanted to take part in the relief effort for the New Jersey town that sent 38 trucks and tradespeople to help them after Hurricane Hugo in 1989.
Council formed a committee to contact Toms River and recommend where to put the much smaller help the town can offer, said Mayor Rutledge Leland.
As an example, he said, the town might focus on one family who helped McClellanville. McClellanville is a town of 500 people. Toms River is 20 times larger.
The Town of McClellanville Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund has been set up at Wells Fargo to accept donations, Leland said.
“We’re not (accepting) anything but cash,” he said. “We’re not set up to take goods.”
