Results for Charleston County School Board election shows at least one incumbent defeated

The Charleston County School Board will have at least three new faces, according to unofficial election results.

In West Ashley, where two seats were up for grabs, retired business executive John Barter had 27 percent while barbershop owner Michael Miller had 23 percent of the vote, with 182 of 182 precincts reporting. They appeared to unseat incumbent Brian Thomas, according to unofficial election results.

In North Charleston, where two more seats were open, incumbent Chris Collins had 44 percent of the vote while retired military colonel Tom Ducker took the second spot with 29 percent, with 182 of 182 precincts reporting. Retired federal prison worker Mattese Lecque came up short in her second bid for the board with 25 percent of the vote.

Incumbent Chris Fraser was the only name listed on voters’ ballot for an unexpired two-year seat in West Ashley. He had 98 percent of the vote, according to unofficial election results.

No one qualified to be listed on the ballot for the board’s downtown seat, so the five candidates vying for the spot did so as write-ins. Those results weren’t available today but could be ready as soon as Wednesday or Thursday.

School board members serve four-year terms, and their main duties are managing the superintendent, setting policies, and approving its budgets.
