Charleston sending contingent of city employees to assist Sandy victims
The City of Charleston is announcing a program to assist the victims of Hurricane Sandy.
Mayor Joseph P. Riley participated in a conference call through the national Conference of Mayors on Saturday afternoon with mayors of areas in New Jersey who have been greatly affected by Hurricane Sandy.
“We have been hearing from our area residents who ask what they can do to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy on our northeastern coast,” Riley said in a statement. “They remember the aid we received and always want to give back when others are in need.”
The city will collect supplies such as non-perishable food, first aid kits, bottled water, personal hygiene products and tools. Since clothing requires a warehouse, the city is asking residents not to donate clothes.
Personnel from the Police Department and Fire Department have begun preparations for moving toward the areas in need of assistance. The city will be working with the Coastal Community Foundation to set up a fund to be used for Sandy relief.
Riley plans to hold a news conference on Wednesday at a drop site to provide more specific details for the community.
