South Carolina Stingrays take on Elmira Jackals
South Carolina coach Spencer Carbery has seen the Stingrays play well offensively and defensively this season.

What Carbery hasn’t seen is the Stingrays play well in both ends of the ice for an entire game. He’s hoping he gets that tonight when the Stingrays take on the Elmira Jackals at the North Charleston Coliseum.
“We’ve had a couple of games where our compete level was very high for 60 minutes, but we didn’t execute very well,” Carbery said.
“What I’m looking for now is a complete game in all three zones. We haven’t played to our potential yet in all facets of the game. I’ve got very high standards and expectations for this team.”
Carbery said the Stingrays took a step in the right direction Tuesday in their 2-1 shootout loss to Orlando — the top team in the ECHL’s South Division. The Stingrays limited the Solar Bears to 30 shots on goal, eight shy of their season average — and one goal in 65 minutes.
“It was a much better effort in our defensive zone,” Carbery said. “Our forwards were much more responsible, our defensemen communicated a lot better and our goaltending was much, much better. I think it’s something that we can build on.”
Carbery said he doesn’t think the Stingrays sacrificed their offensive game with their new attention to detail in their defensive zone.
“To play at a championship level, we have to be better in our defensive zone,” Carbery said. “I’m willing to sacrifice our offensive game a little bit to play better in our defensive zone. I think we’ve got enough skill on this team to score. We need to create better habits in our defensive zone and hopefully Tuesday night was the start of our foundation.”
The Jackals are 5-1-0 on the season and have given up just 10 goals, the fewest goals in the Eastern Conference this season. The Jackals are led by Artem Demkov, who leads the ECHL with six goals.
“Elmira is a very skilled team and it’s a good test for us to see where we stake up against one of the best teams in the league,” Carbery said.
