Summerville closer to annexing Colonial Dorchester historic site; mayor eyeing bike trail improvements

SUMMERVILLE — The state Budget and Control Board has approved the town of Summerville annexing Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site, a move aimed at enhancing the tourism appeal of both.

The decision opens the way for the annexation process to begin. The state must now ask to be annexed, Town Council hold two votes with a public hearing between them.

An annexation also would give the town an annexing presence on the Ashley River Road and a destination point for its popular Sawmill Branch biking/hiking trail.

Mayor Bill Collins is looking at making improvements to the trail.
