Hotel projects will soon add two new restaurants to the Charleston area.
When the 120-room Holiday Inn Charleston Historic Downtown opens at 425 Meeting St. on Nov. 30, it will start serving in The Meeting Room, an all-new restaurant and tapas bar in the five-story hotel.
Executive chef will be Ramon Taimanglo, formerly of High Cotton and The Grocery. Though the hotel and restaurant open Nov. 30, the first rooms won't be available until Dec. 14. Reservations are now being taken.
Over in Mount Pleasant, the new restaurant rising at Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina will be called Blue Marlin Fishhouse, hotel officials announced this week. It broke ground in August, but the name had not been selected.
The 350-seat restaurant at Patriots Point is named after the 881-pound, state-record marlin caught during a fishing tournament in 2005. The decor will include exposed brick, thick wooden beams on the ceiling and nautical accents.
Cuisine will be a mix of land and sea from local sustainable products and include Lowcountry favorites with a twist. The restaurant will open in April.
The 90-plus-room hotel expansion is expected to start in January. The hotel has 130 rooms now.
On the hook
The Wreckfish, a new seafood restaurant in the family of Sam Mustafa's Charleston Hospitality Group, will open mid-November in the former Market Street Saloon site in North Charleston.
The restaurant at 7690 Northwoods Blvd., across from Northwoods Mall, is named after a fish that dwells in shipwrecks or caves on the ocean floor. It will be decorated like a shipwreck with weathered interior, lanterns on tables, crab traps, fish nets, saltwater tanks and huge fish swimming between ceiling tiles.
A half boat will jut from the building above a red awning. The deck will include an oyster bar built like a boat and filled with souvenirs.
The second location for TJ's Beef & Brew didn't last very long. The restaurant and pub at 245 Seven Farms Drive on Daniel Island that opened in June is now called Alchemy, a high-end restaurant with a new menu. It's still under the same ownership as TJ's.
The other TJ's Beef & Brew remains open at 214 St. James Ave. in Goose Creek.
The site on Seven Farms Drive has not been kind to taverns. It previously held the short-lived Dublin Down, an Irish pub, and before that it was Two Rivers Tavern and earlier was McCaffrey's Irish Pub.
The growth of mattress stores continues in the Lowcountry.
Locally made The Charleston Mattress will open a second showroom today at 2 Matthews Court, Unit D, on Hilton Head Island. Its local shop is at 2120 Noisette Blvd., Suite 105, on the old Navy base in North Charleston. Go to www.thecharlestonmattress.com for store hours.
Menchie's will celebrate the grand opening of its new self-serve frozen yogurt shop Saturday through Nov. 9 at 520 Folly Road in Merchants Village shopping center on James Island.
Co-owners Phil Haynie and Noel Poindexter, who also own another Menchie's in Mount Pleasant, will hold a ribbon-cutting and other events 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Look for other promotions throughout the week, which conclude after 8 p.m. Nov. 9 with a buy-one, get-one-free deal.
