Man dies after chase with Walhalla police
WALHALLA — A 68-year-old old man has died after wrecking his truck following a chase with Walhalla police.
Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis says Cleve P. Phillips died Monday afternoon after losing control of his pickup truck on a gravel road.
Addis says police had tried to stop Phillips for speeding. But Addis says the pursuit ended after Phillips slammed on his brakes, and the officer hit him.
Authorities say the officer followed Phillips but wasn’t chasing him, instead waiting on help from county and state authorities. Phillips struck an embankment and overturned. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Bill Rhyne says Phillips died at the scene.
State authorities are still investigating.
